What web developers can learn from scientists and the science community

I've come to the realization that web developers are in many ways like scientists. I wouldn't go as far as to say that what we do is on par with, say, the work of quantum physicists or evolutionary biologists in an intellectual sense, nor is it as important. But our methods, behavior and how we work in peer groups is - or should be- much the same. If we are to contribute to the evolution of our profession raise the bar for ourselves, we need to be reminded of and put into practice the kind of objectivity and sense of solidarity practiced in the scientific communit.

Must-have skills every web designer should possess

A lot has changed for web designers since the dawn of the public web in the early 1990's. With the evolution of web standards and the rise of 'Web 2.0' (ugh, I can't stand that term), the bar has risen quite high for those of us who build web sites for a living. I thought I'd offer my own perspective on the skills one must possess to remain marketable in today's web designer profession.
